When did you first start djing? If you include making tapes and messing about with music then it was in my bedroom when I was about 7 or 8. I started using the turntable on my midi-system to scratch and ruin my vinyl when I was about 11 or 12.
What is your Musical Style? Real house music
Where was your first ever dj gig? An all night disco at my local youth club, fizzy pop and boiled sweets all round. Awsome!
My first paid gig was in a pub restaurant for a NYE party and the owner had a go at me for playing hip hop and house when they wanted Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Jive Bunny. I don’t know, you try to educate people and they throw it back in your face.
As for ‘giving it large to the house massive’ my first proper gig(s) and ultimately my first residency was in a certain venue in sunny Folkestone in about ’93 or ’94 (as you can see my memory’s not quite what it was for some reason). Needless to say, Havin’ It and the Love Lounge legends of Toby, Stuart Peeters and Slim Jim were born and the rest as they say, is history! Thank you Mr Middleton x
What is your most favourite record and why? That’s such a difficult question to answer and to pick just one detracts from all the rest……
Anything by Dexy’s Midnight Runners or Jive Bunny
Where and when was your best gig? That’s another really tough one but I’m going to ‘keep it real’ and not blag with my international dj super-stardom and say:
Downstairs at what was the sticky carpeted Buzz many years ago - tore the roof off all night and closed with Never Too Much. Everyone was singing along, smiling and on such a great buzz - a real old school vibe. Always makes me smile when I think of that one.
What could you not live without in the world? Music. To quote many a verse “it picks me up when I’m down” and is always there when I need it.
Do you have a lucky charm when you dj, if so what is it and why? You make your own luck. Out of mud-guards, crisp packets and sticky-back plastic.
Who was the last person to see you naked? Me, last tuesday. Not nice
What is the worst thing you have ever done whilst smashed? Do you remember that time I met your mum a few years ago?
What is the biggest thing you have ever blagged? About 20 blokes on the guest list at Monypennys for Martin’s stag do. I don’t quite know how I pulled that one off!
If you had to describe Martin Alison in three words what would they be? I can do that in two: My friend
